Years ago I had my hand up too

I was the gal who continually said ‘age is just a number’ and ‘I don’t feel my age’. 

But then reality hit, and all of a sudden I looked in the mirror but could not recognize who I saw in the reflection.     
Part of me was proud that this body had grown two healthy babies in a period that many considered ‘later pregnancy years’. I gained 40 lbs with baby #1 and 60 with baby #2. 
Shortly after that I jumped back into my standard routine of exercise and healthy eating. It worked for a little while but then it all came to a halt when I entered my early 40s. I kept thinking: ‘How could I be doing all the things that worked for me before (pre and post pregnancy), but now I actually felt bigger, slower and weaker.    And now I weigh the same as I did when I was pregnant!

I felt exhausted all the time, my knees and back started to ache and my patience for just about anything was wearing thin. My body was trying to tell me something, but my mind couldn’t comprehend or was too tired even care.  Even as a devoted health and wellness expert I knew I had hit a wall.  

Or shall I say my metabolism had hit a wall.
In the back of my mind, a little voice told me: ‘you do not have to settle for how you currently feel about yourself’. So I dove in, took my 20+ years' experience as a functional trainer and performance nutrition expert, and went back to learn about aging metabolisms and diet-resistant fat.

Women over 40 Need To Know This:

The 3 biggest myths that cause your metabolism to become 

fat loss resistant. 
  Myth 1 – We need to count calories.

Calories are important for fat loss. If you eat and absorb a lot more than you use, then your body’s wisdom will store some for later.

On the other hand, if you don't consume enough calories through the day, your body doesn’t understand what is happening. All it knows is that it is not getting enough to survive and do day to day functions so it will also store everything for later.

Calories do matter.
But, they are not the “be-all and end-all" of fat loss. It is best to look at the quality of calories and how it affects our overall system and changing energy demands as we age. Time to focus on priming your fat buring vs. fat storage hormones.
  Myth 2 – You need to walk 10,000 steps a day or do an hour of elliptical or a 3x/week spin     class.
Having a goal of 10,000 steps is great to get the body moving (it wants and needs it) BUT it is not going to change your metabolism into a fat burning machine.
Hour-long sessions of aerobic exercise can also wreak havoc on your over 40 adrenals and cause more stress on the body. What does the body do when it’s stressed? It holds on to fat. It's a survival response.
Though we never want to forget about the health of our heart and other systems, there are other methods of working out that are just as effective aerobically, less time consuming and more apt to get your metabolism firing all day long.
Yes, I did say less time-consuming.

Myth 3 – Willpower and time are all we need for success.

Relying on willpower is self-sabotaging. You are never going to feel like you want to do it all the time and that’s not your fault because your brain is supposed to protect you from change. Science has also shown that our willpower reserve decreases the more decisions we make. 
So all day you were able to evade the bag of cookies, but then at night, when your willpower is all used up you break. This is totally normal!
Life is busy and constantly thinking about willing yourself to ‘do more’ or add in ‘something else’ will  ultimately stress you out, even if you know that it's for your health, self-worth and longevity.   
So don’t harp on time but rather focus on mindfulness and developing practices that easily adapt to your busy life.

I do not want you to make the same mistakes I did by spending hours of emotional and physical energy on something that will not work for your specific metabolism.
